Day 156 "The Seat, What a pain in the Butt!" 16 May 2009

So my goal for today was to get the seat mounted and what a pain! The seat pan was a little to long so I had to cut it down quite a bit. I was hoping to find a place with a water jet, or plasma cutter but no dice. So I got out the old jig saw slowly got it cut, but slowly is the key word.

I had to free hand the chalk line, the cutting was slow and steady, the pan is thicker then it looks, They told me 10 gauge when I bought the metal, its starting to get there.

Here it is all cut...

Just needs a little grinding.

The mount also needed a little altering to get the seat pan to fit like it should.

Here's the pan with the mount installed. It took a while to drill and when I say while I really mean forever. I think the carriage bolts will work out nice when I get the seat upholstered, they'll be easier to hide and wont spin when I tighten the nuts down.

Here's the pan ready for me to tack the mount into place.

Another shot of the pan ready to weld.

This is shortly after I welded the seat mounting bracket into place. I put the tank back on, (yes I did take it off for the welding) and now I need to order the seat springs I think that 3 to 4 inch springs should work out great, so let the search begin. They have some on e-bay that pretty reasonable. (The above is the biggest picture in this post, click it to see.)

I live in overseas and am having hard time getting anything done here on my XS1100 and ebay stuff here in Germany is really expensive. I would like a single person seat but without all the welding can you help me out somehow?

    1. I would love to help if I could right now, but circumstances of my military employment make it not possible at this time. My honest recommendation is to give the "Shane" at Prichards Upholstery a call or email (prichardupholstery@gmail.com) he will be able to help you and he has the measurements and everything. Shane will be able to make whatever you want.

  9. i contacted him but it was in the $100's. Thats almost more than my bikes worth ;) O well I'll have to figure something else out. I sure wish this was simpler and I had a shop and a metal plate with the springs and bracket so I could just slap it togethor and on the bike. Im not all that mechanically inclined any other suggestions? :)

  10. Thats why your bike is worth, as you said,"that much." Add the seat and it will be worth that much more it's a investment and the end result in most cases you get what you pay for however with Prichards you do get more. Take my word for it.
